Is There Anything Worse Than Ambivalence? Hoyas Lose at Home to Butler 93-89
A few things I’d like to note from tonight’s loss:
- 3 point shooting: 6-22 (27%)
- % of game the Hoyas led: >1%
- Attendance: 4,456
I will be the first to admit that I’ve used the term “rock bottom” too often. Now, to be fair, from an emotional perspective, every time I’ve said it, I’ve meant it. But I think right now, on February 18th, 2026, that is the only apt description of where the Georgetown Men’s basketball team stands. I truly do not believe things could be any worse than they are right now.
On the positive side: we fought. Damn right we did. Every single player gave all they had. You can say to yourself, “well, if we hadn’t been down 14…” and you’d be right. If we’d kept this within 8-10 points, we probably pull off some sort of miraculous come back.
But guess what? We didn’t. And now, short of an MSG run from the heavens, the season ends before the round of 32. Again. Again and again and again. Looking like 6 years without a tournament appearance. Let’s call a spade a spade: it’s embarrassing. More accurately, it’s dispicable. I used to curse the fan base for lack of attendance. Under 5k. How? But you know what? As rabid of a fan as I am, I’m not sure I would’ve gone.
Again, I will put my hand up and say that I wanted Cooley. No, it was more than that. I thought Coach Cooley would bring us back to where we should be. And you know what? I was wrong. Dead wrong. You can argue that not making shots is not his fault, and you’d be right. You can argue that Malik or KJ putting their head down and taking a miserable shot that leads to a turnover isn’t coach’s fault. And, again, you’d be right. But add everything up—the poor shooting, the bad decision making, the abhorrent turnovers and, I’m sorry, but that comes down to one thing: coaching.
As sorry as I am to say it, the program needs *yet another* a total overhaul. Mediocrity is not okay. It’s time for a change. Coach Cooley had his chance. The results aren’t there. Giddy up for *yet another* rebuild. Because I want my children to care about what day we’re playing at MSG in the Big East tournament. I want to bail on work events because I’m going to Nashville or San Diego or Nashville for the sweet 16. That ain’t happening with the status quo.
I will always root and pray for the Hoyas. But it can’t get any lower than this. Here’s to a brighter future…whenever that might be.
